Short Tuesday – Ort

Lucy let out a sharp “yip yip,” causing Mum to turn around and smile at the scene that was playing out at the kitchen table.

Max was done eating, distracted by the small dog balancing on its hind legs, expectant eyes raised up, waiting for the next ort to be tossed from the high chair.  He wasn’t inclined to keep her waiting, tossing yet another morsel down.

Lucy, deft as ever, snapped it out of the air and swallowed it down without hardly a chew, before turning two tight tail chasing circles and resuming her previous position.  Once in place, she let out another quick “yip yip.”

Max giggled wildly reaching beneath his thin plastic divided plate.  This was going to be awesome.

Mum, seeing what was about to happen, panicked.  “Max, no!”

Her reaction was too late.  The plate crashed down, the contents scattered across the floor as Lucy, frightened by the crash, scampered away.  Max giggled even harder.

Mum hung her head, cursed her poor reaction time and the time that would be wasted cleaning the mess.

Lucy went to work without a noise.  There was no time to yip as she had more orts than she had ever before.

Short Tuesday is a little something I try to do on Tuesdays!  Sorry, couldn’t help it.  Anyway, I take a word, a word like ort and try my best to write a short story with it.  The words typically come from Dictionary.com’s word of the day e-mails that show up in my inbox every morning, but aren’t limited to them.

I hope you enjoyed reading my Short, and feel free to come back anytime.
